BS5837: Trees In Relation to Demolition and Construction

Local planning authorities require a tree survey where development is proposed on land containing, or adjacent to trees. A BS:5837 survey is used to understand the quality and value of existing trees, identify constraints on proposed development, and ensure trees for retention are properly considered and protected within the design process. This information is required to support the planning application that is assessed by the local authority as a material planning consideration.

Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA) - An assessment of how the proposed development will affect retained trees, including justification where impacts are unavoidable.
Arboricultural Method Statement (AMS) - A practical method statement setting out how works within or near tree protection areas will be carried out safely and accordance with BS5837.
Tree Constraints Plan (TCP) - Plan identifying tree locations, canopy spreads and root protection areas, used to inform site layout and early design.
Tree Protection Plan (TPP) - Plan showing the layout of protective measures to be implemented on site during the construction phase of development, including fencing, ground protection and exclusion zones.
Planting and Mitigation Plans - Where required, proposals for replacement or supplementary planting to support planning policy and enhance long term tree cover.

Reports and plans are prepared in accordance with BS5837 and tailored to the requirements of the local planning authority.

Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) are orders made by the local authority to protect individual trees, groups or areas of trees, or woodland. If your trees are protected by a TPO you will need permission from your local authority to carry out any work (except in a very few exempted situations) to the trees. Similarly, if you live within a conservation area you also need to apply to work on any trees as well as hedges.
If your property contains TPO trees in root or tree protection areas, you would need a arboricultural consultant to provide a report to if you wish to make any changes. AMT Tree Surgeons are are fully qualified to offer help for anyone dealing with tree preservation orders.

Aerial Inspection

We offer experienced City & Guilds NPTC qualified aerial tree assessments and hazard inspections to inform the future management of trees under the responsibility of our clients.

One of the key requirements when assessing risks posed by trees is to gain an understanding of the likelihood of structural tree failure. Trees situated close to property or on publicly accessible land present potential risk to both personal and public safety. Landowners are responsible for damage or injury caused by trees on their land and have a duty of care to prevent foreseeable harm occurring. Often these hazards are situated within the upper crown of a tree and as such a ground based survey can often not provide comprehensive evidence as to the extent of the hazard present.
